Fishing out of Trophy Lodge, on what we call the “X Shoals,” my buddy, whose Husky Devel was down about 40 feet, hit a fish.
His heavy rod was bent almost double, and was pumping steadily as the fish sounded.
There was no question that it had some size to it.
For a while – at times like this it seems like hours – he could not budge it, then suddenly most of the weight was gone, but there was still something on the end of his line, so we peered anxiously over the side of the boat, waiting to see just what it was.
Attached to the Husky, was a partially digested trout, and did it stink!
He had obviously pulled it right out of the fishes gullet, and a rough guess would put it in the 10 to 12 pound range – meaning that whatever had been snacking on it was big – very big.
To put this into some perspective, I was told that when Rodney Harback caught his 66 ½, it had a fish in its gullet estimated to be between 12 and 14 pounds.
While we will never know just how big it was, any fish that can take in a 10 to 12 pounder as a snack – and even before digesting it’s lunch, attack a Husky Devel - is a Lake Trout to be reckoned with.
